KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Dec. 19, 2005/Satnews Daily/ — Intersputnik International Organization of Space Communications and Industrial Scientists Consortium SDN. BHD (ISC) of Malaysia have agreed to establish a working group to plan the procurement and launch of a telecommunications satellite to develop Malaysia’s telecommunications infrastructure.
Intersputnik said the satellite will be used jointly for commercial operation and will make an offer to the Malaysian government on how to use the satellite to improve the country’s nationwide telecommunications network.
The parties agreed to set up the working group during the visit of Intersputnik’s official delegation to Kuala Lumpur to attend Russia-Association of Southeast Asian Nations Business Forum last week. In the course of a bilateral meeting, Intersputnik director general Vadim Belov and Dr. Mohd Radzi Latif, executive director of Industrial Scientists Consortium, signed an agreement on cooperation for the implementation of the project.
Under the agreement the parties will define the optimum form of their cooperation ranging from the delivery of the satellite by Intersputnik to further joint use to the establishment of a joint venture that will own and operate the satellite.
Just last week, Russia and Indonesia also signed an agreement to study the possibility of developing a telecommunications satellite as well as a ground control station to provide the most advanced multimedia services on Russia, Indonesia and the Asia-Pacific region. The agreement between Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) and PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk was signed also as one of the sidelights of the just-concluded Russia-ASEAN summit held in Malaysia.
Intersputnik and ISC said they will soon sign contracts to define the technological and commercial aspects of their cooperation.
According to Intersputnik, the company will be responsible for the selection of a satellite system manufacturer as well as the delivery of the ground tracking, telemetry and control system.
Intersputnik added it will soon hold negotiations with a major launch service provider regarding the injection of the satellite into the required orbital slot. Intersputnik agreed to offer for joint use its frequency/orbital resource at one of the GSO positions assigned to the Organization by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which is about to be fully coordinated.
