EU Reach Agreement on Galileo Program Facilities

PARIS, Dec. 7, 2005/Satnews Daily/ — European governments agreed on Tuesday to divide jobs by locating various facilities of the $4.24 billion (€3.6 billion) Galileo satellite program in different EU countries.

The EU governments agreed to locate the Headquarters of the Galileo Concessionaire in Toulouse, France while the Operations company will be located in London, United Kingdom. The two Control Centers (Constellation and Mission) and two Performance Evaluation Centers supporting the concessionaire headquarters will be located in Germany and Italy. Spain will host facilities that include redundancy for the Control Centers and related Galileo safety critical application facilities.

EU also revealed that a new consortium of German companies will join the team, adding core competencies to the Concessionaire.

In a statement, EU said the landmark agreement, achieved with the assistance of Van Miert, the European Community-appointed mediator, clears the way for the efficient implementation of the Galileo Program supporting a commercial and best value for money approach to the Galileo Public Private Partnership. The deal also comes after the Galileo budget was approved last month.

“The agreement truly reflects the European dimension of the Galileo program and signifies a major step forward. It paves the way for the creation of all the benefits expected from this truly European initiative: the generation of employment opportunities and innovation in the high technology industry segments across Europe,” EU said in its statement.

The concession partners will now pursue the necessary steps to finalize concession contract with the Galileo Joint Undertaking.
