Boeing Names John B. Sams Jr. Vice President in Air Force Systems

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 17/Satnews Daily/ ¾ Boeing [NYSE: BA] recently named John Sams Jr. as a new vice president of its Air Force Systems business unit, within Integrated Defense Systems.

Based in St. Louis, Sams will report directly to the unit's Vice President and General Manager George Muellner. His primary role is to shape the precision engagement market and execute strategies, share responsibility for the leadership and management of the AFS business unit, and lead the company's U.S. Air Force Tanker Capture Team.

Prior to this assignment, Sams was Boeing program manager for the U.S. Air Force 767 Tanker Program and deputy to the tanker programs general manager.

Sams joined Boeing in November 1999 after retiring from the U.S. Air Force after a 32 year career. During his career, he accumulated more than 6,000 flying hours, including 700 combat hours in Vietnam, and retired from the Air Force in 1999 as commander of the 15th Air Force with the rank of lieutenant general.

In February 2000, Sams assumed the position of Boeing director of C-17 Field Services, responsible for the successful deployment of C-17 Globemaster III aircraft into the Air Force operating inventory. He later became the director of business development for the 767 Global Tanker/Transport Aircraft program.

Sams holds a bachelor's degree in history from The Citadel and a master's degree in personnel management from Central Michigan University. He is also a graduate of the Emory University Advanced Management Program and the Advanced School for Government at Harvard University.
