ORG Telecom Taps Eutelsat’s Sesat 2 Satellite For Expansion of GSM Network in Afghanistan

India, New Delhi, Sept. 24/Satnews Daily/ — ORG Telecom Ltd. has signed a long-term agreement with Eutelsat S.A. to develop the market for cellular coverage via satellite in Afghanistan.

Local telecom operator ORG Telecom is building a GSM network in Afghanistan to facilitate mobile telephony in both rural and urban areas deprived of terrestrial infrastructure. ORG said its network will enable GSM operators to inter-connect different provinces through a satellite network. The company has already connected four remote provinces across the country to the central switch in Kabul and enabled the first ever voice calls to many of these provinces.

ORG's voice traffic is transmitted via satellite using a remote cellular base station connected to VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminals). With Eutelsat's Sesat 2 Ku-band satellite at 53 degrees East, ORG is assured of high-power coverage over Afghanistan and interconnectivity with Europe.

Jan Grøndrup-Vivanco, Eutelsat regional director said Eutelsat has long term plans of offering broadband and broadcasting services and working with ORG in rebuilding Afghanistan’s devastated telecom infrastructure.
