Washington, DC, Sept. 23/Satnews Daily/ — Eutelsat, Inc., the US subsidiary of leading satellite provider Eutelsat S.A., has been selected by NetHope, a consortium of 15 of the world’s leading humanitarian organizations, for 2-way satellite broadband connectivity.
The agreement expands NetHope’s capabilities in providing access to much-needed IT equipment and solutions to support humanitarian projects in developing and underdeveloped countries across Africa, Asia, South America and Europe.
Eutelsat, Inc. said it will coordinate the effort, which includes the development of the satellite network by Eutelsat’s Skylogic subsidiary, based in Turin, Italy. Skylogic will create a hub to support the charitable aid activities of NetHope’s participating member organizations in 40 countries around the world, from Paraguay to Nepal. This will enable 2-way connectivity in more than 100 locations previously not accessible by traditional means of communications – a critical need for NetHope’s ongoing work in these regions.
Skylogic will coordinate logistics, installations, operations, after-sales service and QoS management, and provide a turnkey broadband access solution from its location to offer extensive coverage through Eutelsat’s global fleet of satellites. The IP-based hub in Turin will use capacity on four satellites, including the African beam recently entered into commercial service on Eutelsat’s newly launched W3A satellite.
According to one of NetHope’s founding member organizations, Save the Children, the agreement with Eutelsat is an important part of the group’s overall mission.
NetHope’s member organizations will also benefit from commercial conditions pre-negotiated with Eutelsat/Skylogic for broadband 2-way access deployment, as well as project management for the entire rollout and maintenance of their sites for a term of three years.
