Comtech Vipersat Introduces CDM-570L Satellite Modem Router

Comtech Vipersat Networks Inc. (CVNI) platform uses the Vipersat Management System (VMS) software providing intelligent management of satellite networks through port and system configuration, and alarm management of the protocol, modem, RF equipment and IP broadband networking. CVNI satellite IP networks rely on a high-performance satellite modem with an imbedded IP Router to provide a seamless IP-based infrastructure for satellite networking.  This advanced system automates bandwidth utilization while optimizing space segment efficiency.

The CDM-570L from Comtech Vipersat is the most advanced satellite modem in the industry today.  It combines the latest Turbo Products Codec, FEC and modulation schemes to produce unrivalled spectral efficiency. The CDM-570L’s integrated modem/router and communications controller operates as a hub or remote utilizing TDM/STDMA, SCPC and IP circuit switched management, offering flexibility and control of private satellite networks. The CDM-570L is designed to connect low-to-high-speed data link connections between Ethernet LAN-to-WAN networks, providing a variety of communications services to operators and service providers. The benefit of this architecture yields seamless bandwidth management-on-demand (BOD), while simplifying network capacity needs.

The CDM-570L is capable of performing point-to-point LAN bridging or complex broadband IP routed networks, transporting an assortment of service applications to a multitude of distant VSAT terminals. The receiving VSAT locations transmit as either a dedicated Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) or shared Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) return channel. Additionally, the remote inbound carriers can be switched independently and dynamically between shared or dedicated service modes, providing flexibility to the end users high traffic loads and streaming applications.

The data rate range of the CDM-570L is from 2.4 kbps to 5 Mbps in 1 bit per second steps. CDM-570L modems used in Vipersat networks include Turbo Product Coding (TPC) as a standard feature.  TPC is a FEC technique that delivers significant performance improvement when compared to Viterbi with concatenated Reed-Solomon. TPC simultaneously offers increased coding gain, lower decoding delay, and significant bandwidth savings.

The CDM-570L is an L-band modem which allows it to operate with low cost Low Noise Block converters (LNBs) and Block Up Converters (BUCs) to form a low cost remote terminal.  In addition, its fast acquisition capabilities make the unit an ideal STDMA control demodulator.

Compressing payload and headers condenses the size of data frames and reduces the satellite bandwidth required to transmit across the link. Both Payload and Header compression is configurable on a per route basis; Payload Compression provides traffic optimization and bandwidth reduction up to 40%, while header compression reduces the required Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) bandwidth by as much as 60%. Normal web/HTTP traffic can be reduced an additional 10% via IP/TCP header compression.

The CDM-570L supports multi-level QoS that minimizes jitter and latency for real time traffic, provides priority treatment to mission critical applications, and allows non-critical traffic to use the remaining bandwidth. Three modes are available: Max/Priority, Min/Max, and Diff Serv.

The CDM-570L provides 3xDES data encryption to prevent unauthorized access to data over the satellite link. Encryption is configurable on a per route basis.

The Vipersat network solution combines this modem with a powerful network management tool, the Vipersat Management System (VMS).  Within the CDM-570L is a powerful microprocessor based input/output (I/O) controller supporting a variety of different I/O port types and containing embedded software to support all VMS functionality.  The VMS allows CDM-570L modems to share bandwidth, and when needed, based on application or data load, switch automatically to a dedicated SCPC channel. This effectively enables the network to better handle connection oriented applications and reduce network congestion.  The VMS also allows for dynamic point to point connections to be established between remotes. VMS is scalable, designed to anticipate and accommodate future growth, and is capable of managing networks of any size.
