CALCULATION SECTION............ Used by broadcasters, SNG operators, dish installation companies and dealers serving the satellite TV industry. Written in C++ for speedy operation, dish aiming, link budget analysis and solar outage prediction provide the backbone of the package. The link budget facilities employ rain attenuation and atmospheric absorption prediction modeling even for low elevations.
These and other useful features, such as an integral magnetic variation calculation and tens of thousands of stored town/city coordinates, combine to enable a system to be either designed for any global location. Designed to be very simple to use, it works just like any other Windows application with pull-down menus, toolbar for shortcuts, dialog boxes, text and graphics windows, a status bar and a comprehensive help system.

You can calculate the following:

  • Link Budgets:
Up-down digital and FM link budget calculators with provision for interference, split availability, uplink power control (UPC), E.S. intermod. interference and multiple carriers per HPA. Finds HPA size, uplink power requirements, bandwidth and power usage per carrier. Calculates atmospheric losses and rain fade margins for any desired availability on uplink and downlink.

Link Budget - Uplink Input Screen

Link Budget - Carriers & Modulation Input Screen

Use information rates from 9kbps to well beyond 40Mbps. Optional auto-estimation of output back off and transponder intermodulation interference. Handles BPSK, QPSK, M-PSK or M-QAM with any FEC code rate. Convenient speed button to exchange site dependent details between uplink and downlink for reverse link consideration. Choice of Eb/No (info rate+overhead) or Eb/No (transmission rate) in digital calculations. Ideal software for VSAT networks, Broadcast TV, SNG, Ku trucks, data transmission and radio station feeds.

Additional up-down link budget module, with similar features to above, but does not iterate for minimum uplink power to achieve the link.Instead, there is a facility to optimize the downlink for a given availability or antenna size.

    Downlink Parameters

Two completely independent rain attenuation models may be specified for all link budget modules, graphs and tables. Supplied with comprehensive zone reference maps for both models. Also generates tables of availability v rain attenuation with XPD and downtimes in hours for both "average year" and "worst month" statistics.

  • Tabulate Availability v Rain Attenuation:
Generates tables of availability v rain attenuation with additional calculations for XPD and downtimes in hours for both "average year" and "worst month" statistics. Separate module to calculate XPD and rain attenuation with the corresponding noise increase on the downlink. This is implemented with full printing and file saving facilities.

  • Antenna Aiming:
Calculate elevation, true azimuth, compass bearing and polarization offset for any geostationary satellite from any selected location. Can also calculate minimum and maximum antenna elevation for satellites in inclined orbits. No need to input magnetic variation or consult maps. Site values are automatically determined and the resulting compass bearing calculated.

    Example

  • Quick Dish Sizing:
Calculates short form downlink budgets for both analogue and digital modulated broadcast signals. Fast minimum dish size optimizer for any selected target value of C/N, C/No, S/N, ITU Grade, Eb/No or LNB output level. Find LNB output carrier levels and the antenna size needed for IF distribution systems. Full atmospheric absorption, XPD and rain attenuation calculations.

  • Solar Outage Prediction:
Presents accurate annual lists of date and time windows, for any geostationary satellite/ground station combination worldwide. All time zones supported with zone reference material.

  • Dual / Multi Feed Calculations:
Finds relative satellite spacing from any global location and feed mounting positions relative to boresight. Calculates reduced "squinting" efficiency of the antenna to perform a secondary link budget. Execute any number of times for multiple feeds with results on screen simultaneously. Tabulate dual feed calculations for all towns and cities within a selected country.

  • Footprint Maps:
Over 500 colour G/T, SFD and EIRP footprint maps included in BMP, GIF, PCX, TIFF and JPEG formats. More can be added. Maps can be exported to paste into reports etc.

    Typical EIRP Map

  • Output:
Prints all budgets, graphs and tables with your company name at the top or, if preferred, output may be directly pasted into common spreadsheet packages for editing, customization, or including in other documents. All text output lines up into columns during a paste into Microsoft Excel.

  • Reference Maps:
Displays world and regional maps of ITU and Crane rain-climatic zones, seasonal water vapour density and mean surface temperatures.

  • Modified Polar Mounts:
Locate true north/south anywhere in the world using the sun's position as your guide. Calculates modified polar mount set up angles for any latitude with notes on installation.

  • Overcome Local Magnetic Anomalies:
Select monthly tabulations of the local time when the sun and a selected satellite have the same azimuth. Enables a fixed dish to be installed where local magnetic anomalies may affect compass readings.

  • Data Files:
Supplied with a satellite data file on over 400 satellites and over 30,000 town and city records arranged in over 200 separate country data files. The exact latitude and longitude for each town is included. Easy browse transfer of data to input forms. All databases may be user edited.

  • Table Generator:
Tabulates modified polar mount angles, antenna look angles to any geostationary satellite from multiple town/city locations in a selected country, 'visible' satellites from a single location, and much more.

  • Graph Plots:
Plots graphs relating to digital modulation, ITU or Crane rain attenuation models, atmospheric absorption, dish parabolas, lobe patterns and much more. BER v Eb/No reference chart for Reed Solomon concatenated codes at various FEC rates.

  • Calculations and Conversions:
Performs often used calculations and conversions, including antenna focal distances, rain attenuation with noise increase, off-axis gains and power spectral densities. Includes an editable mathematical expression evaluator for more complex needs.

    Calculation Example

  • Multiple Document Interface:
Allows the simultaneous display of multiple link budgets, maps, graphs and tables within a single application window. Ideal for comparing two or more link budgets.

  • Large Help File:
40,000 word technical help file packed with easy-to-understand theory and practice. Ideal as a staff training or self learning aid for those new to the industry. Full context sensitive help on all input data fields by pressing the F1 key or "what is" button. Option to call up any other third party help file, directly from the application's menu.
