Caves? On Mars? NASA Finds ‘Em : From ORBITS Daily News Briefs

NASA’s Mars Odyssey spacecraft has located the entrances to seven possible caves on the slopes of a Martian volcano. From 328 to 820 feet in diameter, these are dark, almost circular features noted by puzzled researchers who located them in images taken by the Odyssey and Mars Global Surveyor orbiters. Speculation by scientists believes these are the entrances to underground spaces on the planet, due to the temperature differences detected from infrared images taken in the afternoon versus those taken in the pre-dawn morning. These areas have been dubbed “Seven Sisters” and are located on the Arsia Mons volcano near Mars’ tallest peak.
